Angul, situated at the heart of the Orissa. This district was formally formed out of the former undivided [Dhenkanal] district on the date of April 1, 1993 by the late Chief Minister of Orissa, Mr. Biju Patnaik.
The river Mahanadi passes through the district forming a 22 km long narrow gorge, one of the mightiest gorges in India, popularly known as ‘Satkosia’ . The district is surrounded by Cuttack & Dhenkanal in the east, Sambalpur & Deogarh in the west, Sundargarh & Keonjhar in the north and Phulbani in the south.
